Answers to Your HVAC Unit Warranty Questions
HVAC warranties typically vary depending from one manufacturer to another, as do the conditions and specific terms contained within the warranty. When asked this question your No Sweat Air Conditioning contractor will ask you to reference your warranty. Unless we installed, service, and maintain your unit we can not guarantee the answer to this question. However, we can answer this question generally. Note that the information listed here is generalized and doesn’t reference any specific unit, manufacturer or contractor and doesn’t guarantee warranty coverage for any specific use. Read on to learn more about what many HVAC warranties cover and don’t cover.
Are Repairs Covered Under Warranty?
Many homeowners want to take advantage of the warranty that was included in the purchase of a new HVAC unit. At No Sweat Air Conditioning we often hear the question “Are these repairs covered under my warranty?” Unless we installed your unit, service it, and maintain it from installation until the day you need repairs we may not have the answer.
Basic HVAC Warranty Information
To begin, let’s discuss HVAC system warranty in general. Nearly all major appliance manufacturers provide a warranty with the purchase of a new unit either directly or from a licensed dealer. At No Sweat Air Conditioning we are authorized Carrier dealers and will ensure to pass along and explain warranty information of any system we install in your home. This is true of major brand manufacturers like Trane, Lennox and Rheem, too.
It is common for a 5 year warranty to automatically extend to up to 10 years once you register the product. This is the case, again, for most brands but all brands don’t provide this. Your HVAC warranty will cover most components and parts contained within the unit itself and will have conditions where maintenance must be maintained and that require this service and repairs to be performed by trained and licensed contractors. They may cover parts needed for proper functionality.
Installation warranties are often provided by trained, certified, and licensed HVAC contractors and can typically be expected to cover the installation for a period of time. Ask your No Sweat Air Conditioning representative about installation and service warranties included in your HVAC unit installation or replacement, or the service provider you had install your new unit.
HVAC Warranties Coverage

Here are some common components and areas that HVAC warranties may cover:
Parts coverage: HVAC warranties often include coverage for defective parts or components of the heating, ventilation, and air conditioning system. This can include items such as compressors, heat exchangers, fans, motors, circuit boards, and valves.
System functionality: Warranties may cover the overall functionality of the HVAC system, ensuring that it operates according to its intended purpose. If there are issues with temperature control, airflow, or other system functions, the warranty may provide coverage for repairs or replacements.
Labor costs: Some warranties may cover the cost of labor required for repairs or replacements during the warranty period. This means that if a covered component fails, the warranty may cover the cost of the technician’s labor to diagnose and fix the problem.
Duration: HVAC warranties typically have a specific duration, often ranging from a few years to a decade or more. During this period, if any covered issues arise, the manufacturer or warranty provider will bear the responsibility for addressing them.
It’s important to note that warranties may have certain limitations and exclusions. For example, they may not cover damage resulting from improper installation, lack of maintenance, or normal wear and tear. It’s crucial to carefully read and understand the terms and conditions of the specific warranty you have or are considering to know exactly what is covered and what is not.
Remember, this information provides a general overview, and the specific coverage may vary among different manufacturers and warranty plans. It is always recommended to review the warranty documentation provided by the manufacturer or consult with the HVAC company for accurate and detailed information regarding a particular warranty.
What Voids Manufacturer Warranties?
The specific details of what can void a manufacturer warranty for an HVAC unit can vary depending on the manufacturer and the terms and conditions outlined in the warranty agreement. However, there are some common factors that can potentially void a manufacturer warranty for an HVAC unit. Here are a few examples:
Improper installation: If the HVAC unit is not installed by a qualified professional or does not meet the manufacturer’s installation requirements, it can void the warranty. This could include incorrect wiring, improper ductwork, or failure to follow specified installation procedures.
Unauthorized repairs or modifications: Making unauthorized repairs or modifications to the HVAC unit can void the warranty. This includes tampering with internal components, using non-approved parts or accessories, or attempting DIY repairs without manufacturer approval.
Negligent or improper maintenance: Neglecting regular maintenance, such as not cleaning or replacing filters, can potentially void the warranty. It’s important to follow the manufacturer’s recommended maintenance procedures and keep proper documentation of maintenance activities. We always recommend joining our Cool Club to ensure that proper maintenance is kept to date and performed properly to ensure this isn’t the case for our customers.
Failure to register the warranty: Some manufacturers require the warranty to be registered within a specified timeframe after installation. If the warranty is not registered as required, it may void the coverage.
Environmental factors: If the HVAC unit is subjected to unusual environmental conditions that exceed the manufacturer’s specifications or recommendations, such as excessive dust, corrosive chemicals, or exposure to extreme temperatures, it could potentially void the warranty.
It’s crucial to carefully review the warranty documentation provided by the manufacturer to understand the specific terms and conditions that apply to your HVAC unit. If you have any doubts or questions, it’s best to contact the manufacturer or an authorized dealer for clarification.
